The idea for "The Book Shelf" came from the fact that I could never find a good book, especially when I'd just finished reading one that was "incredible", "amazing" or any other form of mind-blowing! I found that I was spending a lot of times trawling various websites, reading reviews and just giving myself a headache. The problem is that whilst reviews are great, when it comes to books, I tend to feel that a lot of people approach them with a sense of bias, and don't really open up to differing opinions and I often found this to be quite conflicting. At the end of the day, books are subjective and open to individual taste, a little bit like art. And unlike a film, where it doesn't matter too much, because it'll be over in a few hours, with a book, I could potentially be spending several days (maybe even weeks) in this world, and I wanted to find a way of discovering books that was a bit more unbiased than reviews and even the blurbs on the back of the books.
Ultimately, when most of us are looking for a new book to read, we are more often than not looking for something remotely similar to what we love. Whether that's a specific genre, themes, character-types or whatever.
And that was where The Book Shelf was basically spawned. I wanted to create a place where books could be connected by various factors, rather than just one and I wanted to open it up so other people could recommend their favourite books, without offering any biased information.
